Getting a WV medical card in Morgantown

Morgantown is home to West Virginia University, which means plenty of people here are new to the state. Residency is the first thing to sort out.

Residency comes first

West Virginia law defines a medical cannabis patient as someone who is a resident of the state. If you grew up here, that is a non-issue. If you moved to Morgantown for school or a job, it is the first question to answer.

OMC's checklist asks for proof of West Virginia residency based on the DMV's list of acceptable residency documents. OMC's caregiver instructions give examples such as a West Virginia driver's license or state ID with your current address, a utility bill, or a voter registration card. A student ID or a lease in someone else's name is not on that list of examples, so check the DMV page carefully before you apply.

A card from your home state will not help you here. OMC says the West Virginia card is valid only in West Virginia, and we found no OMC information saying out-of-state cards are accepted at West Virginia dispensaries.

Finding a registered physician in Monongalia County

OMC's registered physician list is sorted by county. Look under Monongalia, and check Marion and Preston if you live on that side of town. Only an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with OMC can certify you. A large medical center nearby does not mean every doctor there is registered.

If you would rather do the visit from home, read our notes on online evaluations in WV first. OMC lists telemedicine companies and says visits can be online, but the law still refers to an in-person consultation as part of continuing care.

Rather not drive to an appointment?

Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

Check your condition before you book

West Virginia's list has 15 conditions, and it is stricter than some people expect. Anxiety, insomnia and migraines are not on it. PTSD is, with a diagnosis from a medical doctor, licensed counselor or psychologist as part of continuing care. The qualifying conditions page explains each one in plain English.

Dispensaries and the drive home

Use OMC's dispensary list or locator to find licensed stores. We do not name them. Call ahead about hours and stock, since OMC says that information comes from the dispensary.

The Pennsylvania line is close to Morgantown. OMC says patients may not travel outside West Virginia with medical cannabis, so do not bring it on a trip north. Keep it in its original package, carry your card, and never smoke it. Smoking is banned in West Virginia; vaporizing is allowed. The full patient rules cover driving too.

Down the interstate, the Fairmont guide covers Marion County and the Clarksburg guide covers Harrison County. If you are settled in Morgantown and your residency papers are in order, your next step is the physician visit.
