Reading the physician list from Fairmont
The Office of Medical Cannabis publishes its registered physician list by county. From Fairmont, three sections are worth a look: Marion, Monongalia to the north, and Harrison to the south. A registered physician in any county can certify you, so pick the one that suits your drive and your schedule.
Before you call, know who qualifies. The physician must be an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with OMC. Registration means the physician applied to OMC, completed a required four-hour course, and showed they are qualified to treat the listed conditions. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners cannot certify, so a visit with one will not get you a valid certification.
What to bring
The law requires your condition to be diagnosed as part of your continuing care. That makes records your best friend at the visit:
- A letter or visit notes from the doctor who diagnosed you
- Specialist reports or imaging, if you have them
- A list of current medications and past treatments
- Your photo ID
If your condition is PTSD, the diagnosis must come from a medical doctor, licensed counselor or psychologist as part of continuing care.
Rather not drive to an appointment?
Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.
Book my evaluation →Applying in the portal
After certification, apply through OMC's Complia portal with your photo ID, a passport-quality digital photo and proof of residency from the DMV's accepted list. Pay the $50 fee by ACH or a mailed check or money order. If household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, ask for the hardship waiver instead and do not send payment. Allow at least 30 days from the time OMC receives your application and payment. The application guide goes screen by screen.
A parent or spouse applying with you
If you are applying for a child, you will also need a caregiver card, and the caregiver must be a parent or legal guardian. The caregiver application has to be ready before the minor can be approved. Adult patients can name up to two caregivers. See the caregiver guide for the notarized form and background check.
Dispensaries
Use OMC's dispensary list, which includes each store's county and phone number. We do not name stores. Call ahead about hours and stock. Smoking is banned in West Virginia, but you can vaporize flower or concentrate or use pills, oils, tinctures, topicals or patches.
Next year, plan ahead
Your card lasts one year. You can file your renewal no earlier than 60 days before it expires, and you will need a new physician certification each time. The renewal guide has example dates. If you split your time along I-79, see the Morgantown guide or the Clarksburg guide. For now, pull up the Marion County section of the list and make the first call.
