Kanawha County is your starting point
If you live in Charleston, look under Kanawha County first on the Office of Medical Cannabis registered physician list. The list is sorted by county, and it also has sections for out-of-state registered physicians and telehealth companies.
Only an MD or DO who is fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with OMC can certify you. That rules out physician assistants and nurse practitioners, even at a large practice where you see one for routine care. If your usual doctor is an MD or DO, ask whether they are on the OMC list. Registration is a separate step from a medical license, with its own application and a four-hour course, so do not assume.
Living outside the city limits
Kanawha County runs well beyond downtown, up the river valleys and into the hills. If you live in an outlying part of the county, the closest registered office may not be in Charleston at all. Check neighboring county sections of the list too. A shorter drive in the next county is just as valid as a long one inside your own.
If every option is a haul, an online visit may make sense. OMC lists telemedicine companies and says visits can be online, but the law still refers to an in-person consultation as part of continuing care. Read our page on online evaluations in WV and ask the provider how they handle it.
Rather not drive to an appointment?
Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

Living near the state government does not change how you apply. You still upload everything through OMC's Complia portal:
- Photo ID
- A passport-quality digital photo
- Proof of West Virginia residency from the DMV's accepted list
- Your physician's certification
- The $50 fee by ACH or mailed check or money order, or proof of income for the hardship waiver
Then allow at least 30 days from the time OMC receives your application and payment. Our step-by-step application guide covers the details people get wrong.
Finding a dispensary from Charleston
We do not name stores. Use OMC's dispensary list, which gives each dispensary's address, county and phone number, or the searchable locator. OMC says to contact dispensaries directly about hours and what they have in stock.
Statewide, OMC counted 70 operational dispensaries as of September 30, 2026.
Highways and the rules
Charleston is where I-64, I-77 and I-79 come together, so a lot of people here drive for work. Patients are not exempt from impaired-driving laws, and you may not take medical cannabis outside West Virginia. Keep it in the original dispensary package and carry your card. Our full list of patient rules covers smoking, which is banned, and vaporizing, which is allowed.
Nearby city guides
If you split your week between towns, the guide for Huntington covers the Ohio River border, and the one for Beckley covers the southern coalfield counties. Your next step from here is the physician visit, so pull up the Kanawha County section of the list and make a call.
