Medical cannabis cards for Huntington residents

Huntington sits on the Ohio River, across from Ohio and a short drive from Kentucky. Two counties and two state lines shape how you use a West Virginia card here.

The state line is close

Start with the rule that matters most in Huntington. OMC says licensed patients and caregivers are prohibited from traveling outside West Virginia with medical cannabis. Its checklist adds that the card is valid only in West Virginia and offers no legal protection for products obtained outside the state's medical cannabis system.

In a river town, that is easy to forget. If you work in Ohio, shop in Kentucky, or just cross a bridge for dinner, leave your medical cannabis at home. The same goes for caregivers. Our page on patient rules covers the rest of what you can and cannot do.

Two counties to check

Most of Huntington is in Cabell County, and part of it is in Wayne County. OMC's registered physician list is organized by county, so look at both sections. The physician you find in Wayne County is just as valid as one in Cabell.

The certifying physician has to be an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with OMC. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners cannot certify. If a provider in town tells you otherwise, check the list before you pay.

Rather not drive to an appointment?

Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

What it costs

The state fee is $50. If your household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, you can ask OMC to waive it with proof of income. Do not send a payment along with a waiver request. The physician visit is priced separately by the physician, and OMC does not publish those prices. Our cost breakdown lists every fee, including the caregiver fee.

Applying from Huntington

  1. See a registered physician and get your certification.
  2. Gather a photo ID, a passport-quality digital photo, and proof of West Virginia residency from the DMV's accepted list.
  3. Apply in OMC's Complia portal and pay by ACH or mailed check or money order. Payment apps are not accepted.
  4. Allow at least 30 days from the time OMC receives your application and payment.
  5. Download your digital card from the portal once you are approved.

The full application guide walks through each step and the mistakes to avoid.

Finding a dispensary

Use OMC's dispensary list, which includes the address, county and phone number for each licensed store. We do not list stores by name. Look under Cabell and Wayne, then call ahead. OMC says to contact dispensaries for hours and product availability.

Remember the forms. You can buy pills, oils, tinctures, liquids, topicals, patches and flower or concentrate for vaporizing. Smoking is banned, and dispensaries do not sell edibles.

Other cities nearby

Up the interstate, the Charleston guide covers Kanawha County. Upriver along the Ohio, the Parkersburg guide covers another border town with the same out-of-state rule. For Huntington, your next move is simple: check the Cabell and Wayne sections of the physician list and call the closest office.
