Coming in from the county
If you live in Clarksburg, getting to an appointment is easy enough. If you live out in Harrison County, or in Doddridge, Lewis, Taylor or Barbour, Clarksburg may be where you already go for doctors and shopping. That makes it a sensible place to start looking for a registered physician and a dispensary.
OMC's registered physician list and dispensary list both include counties. Look under Harrison first, then the counties around it.
The physician step
Only an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis can certify you. If the doctor you already see is an MD or DO, ask whether they are registered. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners cannot certify, so do not book with one expecting a certification.
Bring your records. The law requires your condition to be diagnosed as part of your continuing care, and the visit goes better with paperwork that shows it.
One trip to the mailbox, not three
Small fixes can cost weeks when you live far from everything. Before you open OMC's Complia portal, have these ready:
- Your physician's certification
- A photo ID
- A passport-quality digital photo
- Proof of residency from the DMV's accepted list
- Payment: $50 by ACH or a mailed check or money order, not a payment app
If you mail a check, OMC's 30-day processing estimate starts when it arrives. ACH avoids the mail entirely. The application guide covers each step.
Rather not drive to an appointment?
Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.
Book my evaluation →Plan purchases around the drive
You can buy up to 6 ounces of flower or 60 grams of concentrate in a rolling 30-day period, unless your physician sets a different amount. Each purchase amount comes back 30 days after the purchase date. If the dispensary is a half-day round trip for you, keep a written log of purchase dates, and call ahead about hours and stock. Our dispensary guide covers the first visit.
Smoking is banned in West Virginia. Vaporizing is allowed, as are pills, oils, tinctures, liquids, topicals and patches. Dispensaries do not sell edibles.
Remember the yearly cycle
The card lasts one year, and you will need a new certification each time. File your renewal no earlier than 60 days before your card expires. The renewal guide has example dates.
