Weirton and the medical cannabis card: a local guide

Weirton is in the narrowest part of the Northern Panhandle, with Ohio on one side and Pennsylvania on the other. That geography shapes almost every practical question.

Two counties, two borders

Weirton straddles Hancock and Brooke counties. OMC organizes its registered physician list by county, and its dispensary list shows the county for each store, so check both. If neither has what you need, the next county south is Ohio County, around Wheeling.

The bigger issue here is how close you are to other states. OMC says licensed patients and caregivers may not travel outside West Virginia with medical cannabis. In Weirton, a short drive in almost any direction except south takes you out of the state. If you commute or shop across a state line, keep your medical cannabis at home.

Seeing a physician without leaving the panhandle

Only an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis can certify you. A doctor licensed only in a neighboring state cannot, even if their office is closer. OMC's list does have a section for out-of-state registered physicians, who hold West Virginia licenses and OMC registration.

If no registered office is close, an online visit may be the practical choice. OMC lists telemedicine companies and says visits can be online; the law itself still refers to in-person consultation as part of continuing care, so ask the provider how they handle it. Our page on online evaluations in WV lists the questions to ask.

Rather not drive to an appointment?

Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

Applying

After certification, apply in OMC's Complia portal. You need a photo ID, a passport-quality digital photo, proof of West Virginia residency from the DMV's accepted list, and the $50 fee by ACH or mailed check or money order. If household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, ask for the fee waiver and do not send payment. Allow at least 30 days after OMC receives your application and payment.

Help from family

If a parent is applying for a child, or an older patient needs help, a caregiver card may be part of the plan. Patients under 18 must have a caregiver who is a parent or legal guardian. Caregivers need proof of West Virginia residency, a notarized designation form signed by the patient, and a fingerprint background check. A relative who lives across the state line will not meet the residency requirement. See the caregiver guide.

Once you have your card

Call dispensaries before you drive. OMC says hours and stock come from the dispensary. Keep products in the original package, carry your card, and remember that smoking is banned while vaporizing is allowed. The patient rules cover purchase limits and driving.

The Wheeling guide covers Ohio County just down the river, and the Morgantown guide is the nearest larger city on our list to the southeast. Your first step in Weirton is checking the Hancock and Brooke sections of the physician list.
