Medical cannabis for sickle cell anemia in West Virginia

Who this article is for

Sickle cell anemia is one of the 15 conditions named in West Virginia's Medical Cannabis Act. This article covers two groups: adults living with sickle cell, and parents of children who have it. The rules differ a bit for each, so skip to the section that fits.

One point applies to both. The law names "sickle cell anemia," the disease. Carrying sickle cell trait is not the same thing, and the certifying physician will look for a diagnosis of the disease as part of your continuing care.

For adults

You will need a certification from an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis. Your hematologist may not be registered, so check OMC's list. Bring:

  • Records confirming the diagnosis.
  • Recent notes from your hematologist or primary doctor.
  • A summary of pain episodes and hospital visits, if you keep one.
  • Your current medicine list.

If the nearest registered office is far, an online visit is one option. OMC lists telemedicine companies and says visits can be online; the law itself still refers to in-person consultation as part of continuing care, so ask the provider how they handle it. Our page on online evaluations in WV has questions to ask.

For parents of a child with sickle cell

There is no minimum age, but a patient under 18 must have a caregiver who is a parent or legal guardian. The caregiver application has to be created and ready before OMC can approve the child.

That means two applications, two fees and some extra steps for you as the parent:

  • Proof of West Virginia residency and a photo ID.
  • A Caregiver Designation form, signed and notarized.
  • A fingerprint-based background check through IdentoGO.
  • The $50 caregiver fee, on top of the child's $50 patient fee.

Both parents can be caregivers, since a patient may name up to two. The caregiver guide has the full checklist.

Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

Paying for it

If household income is below 200% of the federal poverty level, OMC can waive both the patient fee and the caregiver fee. Upload proof of income, such as a W-2, recent pay stubs or proof of benefit eligibility, and do not send a payment with the request. The physician visit is priced separately by the physician. Our cost page lays it all out.

Working with your hematologist

Whoever certifies you, your hematologist should know. Sickle cell care often involves several medicines, and some cause drowsiness. Ask about interactions and about how medical cannabis would fit with your plan for pain episodes. It should not replace urgent care for a crisis or any treatment your hematology team recommends.

Forms allowed in West Virginia

Pills, oils, tinctures, liquids, topicals, dermal patches, and forms for vaporization or nebulization, including flower. Smoking is banned. Dispensaries do not sell edibles, though patients and caregivers may make their own at home to aid ingestion. For children, families tend to ask about measured forms such as oils and tinctures; that is a conversation for the certifying physician and the hematologist together.

What research suggests

Research on cannabis for sickle cell pain is limited. Some studies suggest it may help some people with chronic pain or mood, while findings on pain episodes are mixed and the number of studies is small. It is reasonable to approach it as an experiment you run carefully with your doctors.

Safety and the law

Do not drive after using medical cannabis; OMC says patients are not exempt from impaired-driving laws. Keep products in the original dispensary package and out of reach of children. And the card works only in West Virginia, so do not take medical cannabis out of state. The full patient rules cover the rest.

Next step

Gather the diagnosis records and decide who, if anyone, will be a caregiver. Then book with a physician on OMC's registered list. The qualifying conditions list shows the exact wording, and the application itself takes place in OMC's Complia portal.
