Parkinson's disease and medical cannabis in WV

Parkinson's disease is on West Virginia's list of qualifying conditions by name. If you have the diagnosis, the eligibility question is straightforward. This article is about the practical side: talking with your neurologist, choosing forms you can manage, getting help with errands, and staying on your feet.

Start with your neurologist

The physician who certifies you must be an MD or DO fully licensed in West Virginia and registered with the Office of Medical Cannabis. That may not be your neurologist, but your neurologist should know your plans. Parkinson's medicines are often timed carefully through the day, and anything new should fit around them.

Questions worth asking your neurologist:

  • Could cannabis interact with any of my current medicines?
  • Are there symptoms I should watch for, such as more dizziness or confusion?
  • Would you be willing to share records with the certifying physician?

The law requires your diagnosis to be part of your continuing care. Records from your neurologist show that.

Forms that are easier to handle

West Virginia allows pills, oils, tinctures, liquids, topicals such as gels, creams and ointments, dermal patches, and forms for vaporization or nebulization, including flower. Smoking is banned. Dispensaries do not sell edibles.

If tremor makes a dropper or a small vaporizer hard to use, tell the physician. Pills and patches do not need a steady hand. A caregiver can also help measure doses.

Rather not drive to an appointment?

Online evaluations are available for West Virginia residents. Before you pay, ask how the physicians handle the in-person part of continuing care that the state law mentions. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.

Help with the errands

West Virginia lets you name up to two caregivers. If driving to a dispensary is hard, or the nearest one is a long trip, a spouse, adult child or friend can apply. They will need proof of West Virginia residency, a photo ID and photo, a Caregiver Designation form you sign in front of a notary, and a fingerprint background check. The fee is $50, and it can be waived for hardship. The caregiver guide covers each step.

If getting to an appointment is the hard part, read about online evaluations in WV. OMC lists telemedicine companies and says visits can be online; the law itself still refers to in-person consultation as part of continuing care, so ask the provider how they handle it.

What studies have found

Research on cannabis and Parkinson's is limited and mixed. Some studies suggest it may help some people with symptoms like sleep, pain or anxiety, while evidence for movement symptoms such as tremor is less consistent. It does not slow the disease. Treat any change you notice as something to report to your neurologist, not a reason to adjust your Parkinson's medicines on your own.

Falls, dizziness and blood pressure

Parkinson's can already affect balance and blood pressure when you stand up. Cannabis can cause dizziness and drowsiness, which may add to that. A few habits help:

  • Try a new product at home, sitting down, with someone nearby.
  • Stand up slowly.
  • Keep paths clear at night.
  • Do not drive after using medical cannabis. OMC says patients are not exempt from impaired-driving laws.

Other movement and nerve conditions on the list

If you are reading this for someone with a related condition, West Virginia's list also includes Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis, plus spinal cord damage with intractable spasticity. Each is a separate entry. The full list of qualifying conditions shows the exact wording.

Keeping it going

The card lasts one year, and each renewal needs a new certification. You can file no earlier than 60 days before your card expires. If you have a caregiver, put the renewal date on both your calendars. When you are ready to start, the application guide walks through the portal, and the patient rules cover purchase limits and storage.

Questions people ask

Can my adult son or daughter handle the dispensary trips?

They can apply to be your caregiver. A patient may name up to two caregivers. Each needs proof of West Virginia residency, a notarized designation form signed by you, a fingerprint background check and a $50 fee that can be waived for hardship.

Is Huntington's disease also on the list?

Yes. Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis are all on West Virginia's list of qualifying conditions, along with Parkinson's disease.
